The Spring / Summer / Fall are storms seasons on the Southern Plains which has some really unique weather conditions. Besides our sizzling hot summer seasons that can bake the finish off of your vehicles. We can get really strong and severe or an outright wicked and wild thunderstorm that can produce heavy rains, large hail, abnormally high and very damaging winds drafts and even tornados. As of matter fact Oklahoma has more tornados per square mile than any other State.
When the winds come swiping down the southern plains, Oklahoma's weather is not like any other place on earth! Last year we didn't very many tornadoes like we normal do, but we received a lot of hail. The weather people are calling 2021 "The year of the Hail" and 2022 the year of the drought. Who know what we are going to get in 2023 but we have three days of tornados out-brakes this year. When building any type of outdoor canopy structure with our unique Oklahoma weather conditions, high winds and live loads must be taken into consideration.
Any and all of the building material has their own unique limitations of what they should be used for and that should not be surpassed. There are various deferent thicknesses and types of building materials used to construct anyone building structure depending on the structure's unique applications.
The taller a canopy structures might be the more upload lifts wind drafts the structure is going to get under the canopy structure and it wants to take flight up in the air or they just be torn apart.
The larger canopy frame must be built to withstand these unique weather conditions. Most parts of the country might see 35-mph wind loads so their product may not work very well in our weather conditions. Here we see 85 -100 plus mph winds loads all the time.
What works in one part of the country, might not work around here because they may not see all kinds of winds that those structures are not built for. That is why we tell people not to use any prefabricated kits you might see at the big box stores. Some come from overseas, and most are not built to our building standards. Get protected with a safe and secure well-built perinate canopy structure.
Same goes for the larger patio covers structures. The wider and or the longer the open spins might be the larger and stronger the poles and the cross beams must be.
Do not scamp out on the poles and beams. The frame is what holds the entire structure up! The larger pole and beams are the higher with structure can withstand higher weather eliminates. It does not matter what type of canopy top the structure has on it. The structure is what does all of the heavy lifting. It all starts with the frame!

During one of our extreme weather events, the roof is one of the most vulnerable areas of a structure. But it is the frame of the structure that does all of the heavy lifting. The larger or heavier the understructure framing members are the higher the wind / snow load the structure can withstand.
A good wind seismic performance and engineering are critical and very important to any type of structure design. With that being said there such a thing as an engineered or a non-engineered structure.
A standard build code requirement is a minimum building standard that should be followed. A customer might have their own building standards requirements that is above and of course that is alright as well. Louvered Roof or Movable Rotating Slat Canopy Covers - Has numerous pivoting slats within its top canopy cover that can open to allow the sunlight to shine through its top canopy. Great ideal and design for anyone to allow the sunshine to come though canopy top. Most of the time and normally the high end of a canopy pricing scale so it uses as the wow factor and is limited to a commercial / restaurant or a bar type application uses. Premium top of line residential canopy cover structure. Normally limited in its sizes so when used with a larger area a series of small sizes are connected together to form one larger size canopy structure.
The slats are made of thicker extruded aluminum slats that is formed by forcing the aluminum though a die mold to form its final design shape and size and not rolled into its final shape. Some are also power coated for its color options. Some of slat's designs are heavier better engineered then the other manufactures and can resist hail damage better then then other types of aluminum canopy structure. - Today - Solar Carports & Patio Covers- We can use a very thin-film and flexible type of solar modules that can be installed over low-load-capacity roofs that prove challenging for conventional crystalline solar panels and rack systems because the carport roofs can’t support the added weight. Most were not designed and built to add any additional weight up on top of them. Today’s flexible modules use a factory-applied butyl-based self-adhesive. Installed with this simple peel-and-stick adhesive, flexible modules become an integrated part of the roof system and have the same wind uplift and seismic performance characteristics of the roof system itself.
