We have years of real framing experience. A Better Construction (ABC) which does business as Old Pro Framing company since 1982. www.CarportsandPatioCoversofok.com and www.patiocoverok.com

A Better Construction (ABC) is a custom stick and metal framer and a specialty metal contractor within the Central region of Oklahoma. We are your local experienced tradesman takes pride in their craftmanship on a level of is second to none.

We can help create a beautiful pleasing pergola structure to suite and residential or commercial application.  - Explore beautiful canopy design ideas for inspiration for your own backyard creation. We are also starting to more of a hybrid building material that combines two different building products such as a aluminum that is coated with a vinyl coating. All building materials has their own limits to what they should be used for, and some have limits to their engineered limits such as open spans that should not be exceeded- Explore beautiful structure design ideas for inspiration for your own backyard creation.

Pergolas are normally a old world structure that is also stick/timber framed that is traditional built over a patio or around a pool surface and can be attached to the house or a stand-a-lone structure.  Your pergola can be the centerpiece of your backyard and can protect you from the summer's heat and the sun's rays for numerous years to come.

Pergolas can have 1, 2, or 3 layers and be customized in numerous forms and fashions. The closer the pergola slats are together the higher percentage of  shade the structure will provide. We build all types of wooden structure from the ground up or we are also dealers for one of the best timber framed structures providers in the USA. We hand pick out each and every piece of wood timber that we use for every project. We don't use any pressure treated timbers or lumber. When the timbers are pressurized and treated by injecting chemicals into the wood and when the wood Drys it out it warps and twist all up.

The bigger timbers will split as they dry out but that is part of their old-world charm.

Some structures are covered with plastic covering that we offer as well.

We also offer a maintenance free lifetime warranty fiberglass pergola which can be factory painted to match any decor. It will not warp, rot or decay or require any maintenance. It can span long open spans and between any poles then any wooden product without sagging and can be painted to match any color. This is a building product that does not require any ongoing maintenance such as power washing and staining / sealing the structure.

Pergolas and Arbor Structures.

We build all different types of Pergolas, Pavalion & Architectural Structures out of Wood / Aluminum

Today we blur all of the lines between and patio cover / pergola with a combination type of roof that might also be partly covered, and the other portion left opened with some lattice type of covering for like a spa or used for a cooking area.

A Pergola is identified by having four or more post or columns. Larger structures might have more poles or legs that supports a roof structure that is traditionally flat with beams in one direction and topped with smaller cross beams and / slats / lattice work. A pergola roof can be left open or covered with wood, metal or plastic or can support growing vines.

Pergolas can be built out of several different building materials such as wood, aluminum steel and fiberglass and sometimes we mix or match different types of building materials. We even see a hybrid building products that is a aluminum core structure that is covered with a vinyl exterior.

A Pergola is a larger outdoor arbor structure consisting of columns that support some form of an open roofing grid of beams and rafters.  TODAY PEOPLE MIGHT LIKE TO HAVE SOME OR ALL OF THE PERGOLA COVERED.

We offer a multi-layered translucent polycarbonate or a acrylic plexiclass cover or a sheet metal type of coverings.

The more open spacing the canopy top canopy covering grids are open the more it will allow more of the sun light to enter into the structure and the less shade it will give. The closer the top covering grid or the slats are the less of the suns light are allowed to enter the structure and the more shade the structure will provide.

These top canopy roofing grid designs may be left open or covered so as to create an area sheltered from the weather elements.

Once just an old-world rustic timber frame structure. Today's pergolas can be made from several different building materials and covered with a sheet metal or a poly type of building material so they can used even though it might be raining outside.

We also offer a couple different types of solid top canopies that can be trimmed out of wood or aluminum materials that are made to look like a wood product that doesn't require any of the maintenance that exposed wood does when used as an outdoor building material.

Add style and definition with an appealing outdoor feature to your yard with affordable custom pergolas from Carports & Patio Covers of Oklahoma, we are your local trusted builder.

Wooden Pergola Structures

Wooden pergola structures are custom built using wood / timbers. The wood that used for the outdoor use in normally Cedar or Redwood species that has a built-in resistant's to bugs and termites. The larger timbers are normally Western cedar wood species that is grown in the Western regions of the USA and are a much larger timbers that is harvested around this neck of the woods.

If you're going to build an outdoor structure from a premium such as cedar or a redwood that has built-in resistant to pest infestations these wood materials are worth being protected from the weather.

The wood must be protected and maintained over time or timbers will turn to a dull gray color much like an older cedar picket fence.

All of the larger wood timber are going to crack with deep larger valleys called fishers because of the moisture within the timbers and the changing of cold and warm seasons. This is normal with larger timers.  Some just want the look, feel, and smell of an old-world rustic cedar or redwood arbor and there is nothing like that nor can be simulated!

Who wouldn't really want one of these elegant rustic structures in your own backyard!

What the difference between a Pergola, Gazebo or a Pavilion

Pergola / Arbor / Gazebo / Pavilion

Pergola is a larger arbor structure that are normally built to allow the weather with wind, rain or the sun to enter into the structure. A gazebo is structure that has a roof and doesn't allow the weather to enter the structure. A pavilion is a larger gazebo that allows for more people to gather.

But today we blurred the lines as some might want a Pergola structure but cover the structure with different cladding materials today such as polycarbonate or the laser cut designs in several different building materials.

We don't care what you call the structure. We just have to get on the same page with you moving forward of what you want built.

Arbor

An arbor is a rustic garden gateway structure that might welcome into a area. It is a series of beams or slats or can have some lattice type of roof work. They can be used an entry way to your back yard over a gate. Most might associate a arbor with a bowed type of structure in a wedding ceremony. it might consist of a couple two or three post with a overhead header and might have a seating bench. It is a smaller garden welcoming structure to a larger pergola structure.

Pergola

A pergola is a larger rustic arbor structure that is a series of beams and lattice work that allows for the weather to enter into the structure.  It is normally an oblong shaped structure that can have two or three levels of beams and lattice work.

Today we blurred the lines with what is referred to as a "combination type of patio cover" with some portion of the roof being a solid roofing material and some portion being a series of beams and lattice work.

Gazebo

Gazebo is a rustic type of shade structure that has a closed in roof to protect people from the sun. Normally a Octagon shaped structure but can be oblong shape as well. Some might call it a small pavilion type of structure.

Pavilion

A Pavillion is a larger open-air type of structure with a roof that allows more people to gather.

Things to consider when building an arbor / pergola / gazebo or pavilion structure.

1 - Free Standing or an Attached structure?

This question is the first and best way to start distinguishing between these outdoor structures. If your project is freestanding, then it is either a pergola or patio cover. A patio cover can also be attached like an arbor (we’ll go into that difference in question two). Arbors will have posts or columns on one side and be connected to a home/building on the other side. This can be a point of confusion because many blogs, images, and descriptions refer to arbors as being freestanding arches or gateways to a garden or backyard.

2 - Rafters or a truss Roof?

Pergolas and arbors use posts connected by joists and rafters for shade and stability, but those rafters don't keep rain or the elements out. It is an open-air roof structure.

3- Size of the structure -

This is sort of a trick question: there are no size guidelines differentiating arbors, pergolas, and patio covers. All three structures can be small or expansive based on what you want. Some may argue that smaller freestanding structures are considered arbors, but unless the structure is attached to a home or building it is still considered a pergola.

4 - What type of building material are to be used.

5 - Corbels and rafter tail end types, Bracket and knee brace types.

6 - Any type of top canopy covering. Today people may want to be look a rustic pergola but still may want to cover with wood, metal or a ploy type of materials.

7 - The color of stain / sealer / paint

Fiberglass Pergola Structures

The ultimate outdoor building material is fiberglass. With higher pricing within the lumber market, you might want to explore the use of these advance outdoor building materials. Made to last a lifetime with little to no maintenance issues. It doesn't rot decay nor require any ongoing maintenance.

The fiberglass is always white, but fiberglass allows us the pant the product when needed to match any decor.

Fiberglass can span longer distances and will not sag under its own weight like a vinyl-built structure. 2x stronger than vinyl structure and it won't get bridal or turn yellow over time.

Higher Strength-to-Weight Ratio - Pound for pound, our lightweight fiberglass-reinforced components are lighter than wood but stronger than steel.

-Fiberglass - Reinforced composites are naturally corrosion resistant. They will not rust, corrode, or pit in external applications. Termites hate it and won't touch it.

Consistency in Appearance and Performance - Compared to traditional materials, fiberglass components offer a uniform appearance that lasts for years. They do not twist, warp, or bow after installation and they maintain their full strength over the life of the product.

• Low maintenance just clean it and go
• Will not rot, check, or split
• Weather and Insect Proof
• Stability - Stronger
• High Strength to Weight Ratio
• Pound for Pound Stronger than Steel

This is the ultimate lifetime outdoor building product

The only problem with fiberglass pergola products is that there are a couple of manufactures at this time.  And not a product with local distribution yet.

What is a Decorative Panel

A decorative panel is a panel that can be custom cut a decorate design out of several different building products such as but not limited to wood, metal, aluminum and plastic panels. A restaurant may want a fork, knife and spoon design in their canopy top. A sports fan a want a team Logo cut into its decorative panel. A company may want their logo cut into it canopy design.  All types of shape and sizes can be cut into almost any building materials. These panels are then attached to some type of understructure. Sidewalk covers and patio covers are popular. These custom cut sharps are then projected down onto the below flat surfaces while the sun passes over the canopy. Decorative panels are used in all types of Architectual designs applications such as pricey fences and divides.

What is a Combination Patio Cover?

Any portion of the patio top canopy can be a solid section of the canopy top, and any portion can be a pergola section to vent out the smoke from a BBQer ad be open air section. Then we can add the screen room walls and doors then we got the recipe for a Combo - Patio Cov - Screen Rm - and Pergola section all into one unit.

What is Alumawood and Naturewood?

Rolled formed aluminum patio cover with a Santa-Fe trim package on it. Steel C beam header / poles.

Alumawood / Naturewood

Alumawood patio cover is a lightweight aluminum type of patio cover tubing building material that has been painted, manufactured, and embossed into shapes and sizes that look like wood.  This product is an elegant low maintenance patio cover that is durable.  From a distance, alumawood looks exactly like wood. It is manufactured in a wide range of colors and shapes. You can get Aumawood that looks exactly like redwood or cedar wood.  The biggest pro of Alumawood is that it combines all that’s great about wood and aluminum. It looks like wood, but it wears like aluminum.

So, you can have all the beauty that comes with wood and all the protection from weather and damage that comes with aluminum. It is not a solid piece of like wood; it is a hollow core tubing that come in different sizes with an option between for different rafter tail ends.

Naturewood  -  In 2019 Elite aluminum introduced the Nature wood Pergola systems to enhance the look of the traditional patio cover with the design of cedar embossed wood.  Very similar products.

Cons - Alumawood or the Naturewood products is its structural integrity.  Its strength may be a concern especially in longer spans and in a high wind weather event, so we just use it as trim products only.

It can a everyday same ole same ole project and turn it into a wow would you look at that project!
